Hello World! (Again)

Well, this is happening again. 

 This is the second time I've started this blog again, for one very important reason: I need to write more. The thing about trying to be a writer is that you need something to point to to demonstrate that you, well... write. 

 So let this day ring out as the day I start this blog as the repository of whatever random thoughts breeze through the sleep-derived, caffeine-and-cheese-fueled lump of matter that I use as a brain these days. 


As for the reader: I hope you enjoy what I write here, and may you always have time to brush your teeth thoroughly.

Redesigning Elves - An Uber-Nerdy World-Building Exercise

My first attempt at creating elves did not go according to plan.  I love fantasy as a genre. Which is odd to say on introspection, because the amount of fantasy literature, films and games that I have indulged in and am genuinely fond of is rather limited. It's basically limited to these options...  Literature : Discworld and The Malazan Book of the Fallen series, The Hobbit and Mogworld.  Films : The Lord of The Rings trilogy and the made-for-Netflix film Bright. Don't judge me, dammit, I likes what I likes.  Video Games : The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma, Darkest Dungeon, Bastion, The Battle for Middle Earth II and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Far Cry + Speculative Zoology = Win?

Being the paleontology nerd I am, it's no surprise that one of the first things I put up on this blog is that a Far Cry game with dinosaurs would be totally friggin' sweet .  Hell yes.  On a similar note, I recently got hooked on the topic of speculative zoology. In particular, a specific website dedicated to one rather bizarre thought experiment: what if you seeded a world with just enough life to support a population of canaries, and just let natural selection take its course for millions of years? That website is Serina: A Natural History of the World of Birds  (the brainchild of artist Dylan Bajda, a.k.a Seather888 ), which is one of the best hard-science speculative zoology projects I've ever heard of.
